A Spartan Journey

Michigan State’s 1967 Miracle on the Mat

By Dale Anderson

A stirring autobiographical account of an amazing season by two-time NCAA champion Dale Anderson!

The mid-60’s was an ever-so- brief era when Michigan State had the best athletic program in the country – national championships in football, wrestling, soccer and hockey as well as numerous individual national champions in track, gymnastics and swimming.

The book, A Spartan Journey, while describing this athletic era, focuses on the Michigan State wrestling team. Told autobiographically, Dale Anderson, a 1967 NCAA champion, reflects on the times and describes what can only be explained as a miracle. The wrestling program, which finished last in the Big Ten in 1964, finished first in 1967 with a team, the majority of whom were walk-ons.

Dan Gable - A Spartan Journey

“Dale Anderson helped my thinking about how to wrestle and how to win. I hope he will help everyone who reads this book to better understand wrestling in the 1960s, how Michigan State won the NCAA wrestling championship in 1967, and how to be a better wrestler or coach, or person!”
-- Dan Gable, 1972 Olympic champion, coach of 15 NCAA championship teams.

“I read Dale Anderson’s stirring account of that magical 1967 season with tremendous interest and highly recommend the book to anyone who has even a passing interest in the history of wrestling in America.”
-- Mike Chapman, author of 27 books, founder of WIN and the Dan Hodge Trophy.

InterMat Reads - A Spartan Journey

Dale Anderson was a member of that history-making Michigan State wrestling team that helped propel the Spartans to that team title nearly a half-century ago after having been a struggling, cellar-dwelling squad just three years earlier. Now he tells that story -- along with what he describes as "a travelogue of my (wrestling) life" that intersects with a number of familiar names in the sport -- in his brand-new book "A Spartan Journey: Michigan State's 1967 Miracle on the Mat."
